Mitsuo Matsushita

Biographical Information

Mitsuo Matsushita is a professor of law at Seikei University (Tokyo Japan) and a special adviser of the Tokyo law firm: Nagashima, Ohno & Tsunematsu. He is a member of Tokyo Bar (Daiichi Tokyo Bengoshikai).

He was a founding member of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization (WTO) from 1995 to 2000.

He obtained a Ph.D degree from Tulane University and a D.Jur degree from Tokyo University. He was a professor of law at Sophia University (1968-1983) and at Tokyo University (1984-1994). He was a member of a number of advisory councils attached to the government of Japan including: The Customs and Tariffs Council (the Ministry of Finance) and the Telecommunications Council (the Ministry of Telecommunications and Posts). He was a visiting professor of law at Harvard Law School (1977-78), Columbia Law School (1987-88), Michigan Law School (1990-1993) and College of Europe (1992-1995).

Currently he is: a visiting professor of the World Trade Institute, Bern, Switzerland, a member of the Industrial Structure Council attached to the Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry of the Japanese Government and an adviser to the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consulting Center established by the City of Shanghai, The People's Republic of China.
