In INS, Associated Press (AP) sued Randolph Hearst’s International News Service (INS) when the latter used the former’s news for its own news service business. As far as the misappropriation claim was concerned,1 the news items were obtained by copying AP’s news items from public bulletin boards and from early editions of AP’s east-coast newspapers. At that time, during World War I, most foreign news reached the US at the Atlantic seaboard, principally at New York.
