It was reported that by the end of 1999, China was among the top ten countries having the largest number of Internet users in the world. China is the most populated country in the world, and the number of Internet users is still small in proportion to population. According to the survey made by the China Network Information Center (CNNIC), by the end of January 2000 there were 8,900,000 Internet users in Mainland China – perhaps not very impressive without taking into account that this represents 143 times the reported 62,000 users three years ago.
