One of the most vexing questions in an era of creative machines is whether these should receive copyright protection for the works they create. The question is no longer whether creative machines can create copyrightable works – they do, even to the extent that algorithms meant to check whether works were computer-created can be outwitted. But would the reasons why human authors have been allocated copyright protection for their works also apply to machine creators, and, if so, who should be given such rights – the computer programmer, the machine creator, or the owner of the machine?
