Trust in equitable systems for trade and the dissemination of information is key to the functioning of a free market economy. In a data-driven society, questions arise on the selection and treatment of (non-)personal data for the purpose of analysis and automated decision making. These big data sets and the algorithms that drive artiicial intelligence are, however, often proprietary and subject to trade secrecy. This contribution assesses the need for transparency in ensuring that bias and distrust can be addressed in the interest of societal acceptance of AI technologies.
