As recently as 1933 the Internet was purely a figment of a writer’s imagination. In The Shape of Things to Come, H.G.Wells put forward the idea of a Fundamental Knowledge System with some 17 million workers gathering and ordering everything in the field of knowledge, a world brain or encyclopaedia fed by universities and research institutes. This imaginary world became reality with the creation of hyperlinks and the advent of the World Wide Web in 1992. Wells’s vision was fulfilled though his figures were wrong. There are now some 53 million hosts, 3 million websites and some 304.36 million were on-line as of March 2000
